November one 2024: The autumn has been surprisingly strong! There was no rug pull. Why good autumn? I honestly have zero idea.
Service business update 7
Well, my last update was super doomerish 12.6.2024: This was also an idiotic take, but gladly, I got this so wrong.
The good vibes have continued. My business is not strong, but for the first time in 5-6 years, the outlook looks good. The last 3 months have been good!
Back in Action
After the COVID theatre, I kinda gave up. I was even hoping to go bankrupt. To my surprise, hard work and resiliency paid off, and now I have the problem of what to do: grow a little bit. Take it easy? No worries about bankruptcy anymore.
I have discussed competency problems extensively in Finnish-listed companies. Can you imagine how bad they are in small service companies? If you ever wanted to quit your soul-sucking corporate drone job, now is a good time.
✅ Respond fast to phone calls and emails
✅ Be on time
✅ Do what you promised
Well, you actually have to do some “work”, be it cleaning, washing cars, being an electrician etc. Instead of just showing up to the office. (Thanks to the YEL fiasco, starting a business has never been trickier if you are a one-man show…)
Why continue to do some business?
✅ You meet awesome people
✅ It is fun and challenging
✅ Money earned through business = better money
One of the reasons why I wanted a service job instead of an “office” was to be able to explain to my kids what I do, it takes 5-10s to explain this, if it takes more than that, it is probably a bullshit job. (Also I didn’t have the skillset to survive in an office environment.)
What my finance friends and majority of you wankers out there will never understand is that doing actual work to earn money is meaningful. Selling stocks and making money? Just numbers. Suckle government subsidies and sell some “green transition” shit? = cuck money.
I don’t know what the fuck I am trying to say here, but currently, I am extremely happy, and hopefully that I can promise more work for my workers, and the result for the year 2024 will be positive (just a little bit) and I did not earn that much.
Yes, I made 2x more by gambling some fucking god awful coinbase stock. Am I proud of it? Do I feel good about it? Well, I feel like a maggot. I justify gambling because I feel everybody is forced to do it.
You cannot escape the matrix by working some service job 24/7. Been there, done that.
Why all the services, products etc are so shit? Massive misallocation of capital over decades.
Barely anything goes to “real economy”, while financialization continues and all kinds of nonsense get funded (Solar Foods)
Here in Finland, Taxes continue to rise, and bureaucracy is increasing; it is very hard to get by with a service industry salary. I already pay above what competitors pay (best workers) only thing i can give is shorter days so you have time to hustle some side job if you need more money…
The only way I can raise my prices is to do a little bit shittier service; it is still a lot better than the competitors do.
Why entrepreneurship is actually great in 2024 and beyond?
✅ You become bullshit-proof (can smell corporate nonsense from miles away)
✅ Real skills
✅ AI can also be a huge win for the “people.” All the corporate bullshitters and government bureaucrats will and can be replaced by the AI.
✅ You understand how the real economy actually works
✅ Every day is different and challenging
✅ You learn everything from accounting to marketing
✅ Instant feedback - you see results of your work immediately
✅ Freedom to make your own decisions (even the bad ones)
✅ No need to pretend - honest work speaks for itself
✅ Better capital allocation skills (you learn what actually creates value)
✅ Bullshit detector gets upgraded to god-tier level
✅ Forces you to be curious. You can’t be/become an NPC.
We don't have a “people” problem. We have a system that makes actually doing things nearly impossible.
If you have any skills - literally anything useful - there's never been a better time to start a business. The bar is so low that just showing up on time makes you premium service.
Will you get rich? Probably not. But who needs more stuff anyway? There's something way better: doing real work, seeing results, and not being part of the bullshit machine. Embrace minimalism, reject consumerist cope, and find fulfillment in craft and competence. And yeah, you get to be annoying on the internet too. Win-win.
Always have a Plan B. The way things are going in Finland (and Europe), you'd be stupid not to. Stack some sats, and keep your options open. The socialists are working overtime to make actual business impossible here. The good thing about being an entrepreneur? You learn to adapt. Whether that's adapting here or somewhere else, we'll see.
The stock market? It's a pure clown world. S&P500 has over 20% gains in two years in a row. Can it continue? Absolutely. But trying to figure out the top is a fool's game. Right now, it's +EV to focus more on building the business than gambling. At least you control “something”.
Autumn and early winter continue to surprise us. Maybe there's hope for the real economy after all. It's time to focus on growth - the slow, honest kind. Let’s make 2025 a good one.
