Embrace the Cockroach Mentality: Resilience and Adaptation in the Face of Adversity
The Unlikely Inspiration: Lessons from Cockroaches. Cringe warning - this is part of my self-indulgent rant series.
Cringe warning - this is part of my self-indulgent rant series, this time high school tier philosophy. It is extremely cringe to cry about my failing business when there are a lot bigger problems…
I am also highly disappointed to see any resilience among my peers, friends, and fellow citizens. Get covid subsidies and free zero-interest rate money… What to do? Blow it up immediately. What about saving for a rainy day fund? Then cry: now we need more subsidies for electricity prices. They turn to the government the second they have to use a brain cell, which is hugely disappointing. The pain will be greater in the future - Maybe the recession won’t come near future, but certainly, it will come in the long run. What will you do? Cry government to help? How about growing a pair? Or start larping a cockroach!
Are you worried about the uncertainty of the future?
In this article, I'll share my experiences, lessons learned, and the "Cockroach Mentality" concept to help you navigate life's challenges and build resilience, even in adversity.
I built a successful business from the ground up, with a revenue of 1 million and a net result of over 300k. I was on the verge of achieving my goals when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and wiped away all my hard work. It was a devastating and confusing experience, but it taught me valuable lessons about failure, adaptability, and resilience. I realized the importance of adopting a "Cockroach Mentality" to survive and thrive in whatever life throws at us.
You have to lose in life to find new.
We might head towards high uncertainty and adversity. Already plenty of bankruptcies here in Finland. I am afraid that after summer it will only get worse.
Our goal in this post is to cope with life's challenges better.
Understanding the Cockroach Mentality
Why cockroaches?
1. Survival instinct
Cockroaches have an incredible drive to survive. Similarly, we can tap into our inner determination to push through tough times and seek better opportunities. It's okay to fail; what matters is learning from our mistakes and moving forward.
Living within our means and maintaining a solid financial foundation provides us stability needed to tackle challenges head-on. Build an emergency fund and budget everything now!
2. Quick reproduction
Cockroaches rapidly reproduce, ensuring their survival. We can adopt this mindset by constantly evolving and growing our skills. Instead of dwelling on problems, focus on acquiring new skills and knowledge to overcome them. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and self-improvement.
3. Ability to thrive in diverse environments
Cockroaches adapt to their surroundings, no matter the conditions. We can learn to embrace change and make the most of our circumstances, finding growth opportunities even in desperate situations. "Chaos isn't a pit, chaos is a ladder."
4. Capacity to consume various food sources
Cockroaches are resourceful and able to find sustenance in diverse situations. Similarly, we can nourish ourselves with numerous experiences, learning from each one to become more resilient and adaptable. Embrace setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow instead of dwelling on them. New hobbies? Learn from mentors? Grow professional skills to be more recession-proof? Or continue to consume entertainment?
Drawing Inspiration from Stoicism and Other Techniques
As cockroaches, we can adopt and pursue frameworks that help us with our goals. Become more resilient and adaptable. Negative visualization is very powerful - do you want to be in your current position in 10 years?
Acceptance of what cannot be controlled: Stoicism teaches us to differentiate between what we can and cannot change, encouraging us to focus our energy on the things within our power.
Focus on personal virtues and inner strength: Stoics believe that developing virtues such as wisdom, courage, and self-discipline is essential for a fulfilling life, empowering us to tackle challenges head-on.
Mindful detachment from external circumstances: Stoicism promotes the idea that our happiness is determined by our internal mindset rather than external events, enabling us to maintain composure in adversity.
There are plenty of other techniques and frameworks, but these I pursue: The goal is to build a resilient mindset and embody a cockroach mentality.
In addition to Stoicism, consider the following:
Mindfulness and meditation: Promote mental clarity and focus, empowering us to cultivate resilience, embrace change, and thrive in the face of adversity
Journaling and self-reflection: Regularly writing about one's thoughts, feelings, and experiences can provide valuable insights and promote self-awareness, helping individuals better understand their reactions to adversity and develop coping strategies.
Physical exercise: Regular physical activity has been shown to improve mental health, reduce stress, and increase resilience. Overall awesome mood after a workout, and sleep is 10x better.

Practical Steps to Cultivate the Cockroach Mentality
Embrace change and uncertainty: Accept that change is inevitable and view it as an opportunity for growth. By embracing uncertainty, we can adapt to new circumstances and become more resilient in the face of life's challenges, much like the cockroach.
Embrace change and uncertainty:
Accept that change is inevitable and view it as an opportunity for growth. We need more creative destruction. It is good!
Develop a growth mindset:
Believe in your capacity for improvement and learning.
Practice gratitude:
Focus on the positives in life, even during tough times. Things could always be a little bit worse.
Cultivate emotional resilience:
It is hard to manage emotions to make the best decision possible. Meditation & journaling have helped me. It is like a gym. Without it, I am lost, and my mind races everywhere.
Build a support network:
It would be awesome to have a network to vent out and share some encouragement, understanding, and guidance. I think my IRL friends are not keen on my cockroach larping, and it is fine; this shit is not for everybody. Was my dream as a kid to be some “cockroach”? Fuck no. Maybe this is some random phase and will pass, but I let this ride.
